Planning for 1989 grape production after 1988 heat
The 1988 grape season ended with high July and August temps and above average crops. Many vineyards faced water stress mid or late summer, advising irrigation in January or February. Uneven bud break from winter dryness and heavy crops raise concerns about wood maturity and frost risk, especially for Thompson Seedless and Emperor. Growers should review production practices to maximize pack-out, consider pest management constraints, and anticipate tighter pesticide rules and worker re-entry limits while aiming for 7 to 8 hundred boxes per acre and improved overall efficiency.
