Pink bollworm threat to California cotton industry
UC Riverside entomologist Dr. Harold Reynolds warns the pink bollworm could devastate San Joaquin Valley cotton like the alfalfa aphid did in the 1950s. He cites improved soils, shorter growing seasons, shredding and defoliation methods, irrigation, and new chemicals as partial controls, but calls for a broader UC crash program with more funding.
