Christmas Gain At Shafter Post Office Shows Busy Rush
Shafter post office reports an average of 1000 letters per day during the December 15 to 25 Christmas rush under Postmaster Lois L Berry. Daily letters reached 6500 this year versus 5900 last season, with stamp sales about 500 higher and Christmas cards up 15 percent. Two extra part time clerks joined regular staff while hours lengthened. parcels handled also exceeded prior totals. Regular force includes Koleta Osborn John Roskam Ernest Siemens Lawrence Kattenhorn George Guenther and Rey Painter rural carrier. Despite irregular train schedules from defense demands, Christmas mail was handled more efficiently than any other year, say office staff.

Red Cross First Aid Classes Set At Shafter High
An official Red Cross adult first aid class will open at Shafter High School next Tuesday evening at 7 with instructors Jack Hare Frasquita Sullivan and possibly a third. A 10 two hour lesson course awards a Standard Red Cross card valid for three years. Sixty nine people have signed up plus 23 department men. enrollments welcome at the high school Tuesday. An advanced first aid course starts January 8 at the County building Wasco with about six Shafter participants, led by Orville Helmforth. Classes meet weekly.
