Kern County hosts extensive wild flower fields drawing up to 500000 visitors in a single season from February to April. Arvin gains fame for floral displays dating to 1927 with aerial surveys and bulletins tracking poppies lupine and other blooms. The ideal California soil climate supports over 4000 species with about 40 percent found only in Kern County.
