Paul Newels urges a cleanup drive in Shafter California to stop krudbums from littering sidewalks and gutters. He suggests trash cans in business districts and posters with messages like Dont be a KRUDBUM to educate and shame offenders.
East Bakersfield High School faculty, led by Gil Bishop and featuring Carl Jansen and Grant Jansen, faces Shafter High in a Monday night benefit game for the Shafter Boy Scouts building fund at 8 o’clock in the high school gym. Proceeds support the Scouts. tickets available from service groups or at the school.
The Maple P T A held a well attended meeting with 125 members and guests. Loran Grant performed on trombone with songs by Mrs Horace Grisso and Mrs Wood. Mrs A Clemens accompanied on piano and Mrs Harold Britain read selections. Irene Parks spoke on a band horn purchase and a Boy Scout report was given. Lincoln birthday decor highlighted the event and a pie sale netted a good return.
Potato planting nears completion in Shafter and Canelo-Lerdo districts with an estimated 25 percent drop from last year due to government program cuts. Farmers shift land to cotton and sugar beet while Edison district potatoes are above ground ready for digging mid April and Shafter crops by mid May. Increased cotton acreage is expected to keep five local gins at full capacity.
The Shafter Press reports State lacks authority to build walks. the County may construct on State property. A Shafter Safety Council meeting at 8:00 pm will discuss forming county safety councils to reduce Kern County fatalities through local and Bakersfield coordination.
The 1946 Shafter High football champions received gold football awards at a Friday assembly on Feb 21. Captain Herb Spitzer received the Sierra league trophy and passed it to student body president Bob Peters. Coach Dan Bledsoe presented the awards as Moe Farland energized the pep rally.
Two 16 year old youths were arrested last week on a petty theft charge for stealing hub caps from a local car. Dale Vandever lives at Government Camp with his parents, having moved to Shafter from Arizona a month ago. Delphin Mc Coy lives with his grandparents on a nearby ranch. The juveniles have been certified over to the Juvenile Court in Bakersfield.
Carolyn Spitzer III is at home ill with condition reported as improving. No additional details provided.

Shafter Generals lost a close Sierra League verdict to McFarland 31 to 28 on Friday night. Saturday night they face Wasco in a tune up at Wasco High School gym as fans anticipate a capacity crowd for the season finale. Shafter C squad shares league honor with Tehachapi and a playoff may precede the Wasco clash.
McFarland High School’s Cougars upset Shafter High 21 28 last Friday to forge a two way tie for second in the Sierra League with Shafter. East High topped the Generals 35 26 in Bakersfield Saturday, while Shafter B’s and East Bakersfield seconds posted wins and Tehachapi tied for the division crown after a 34 14 victory by Shafter C’s. Plans for a playoff encounter are announced.
A safety group meets tonight at 8:00 p m in the Assembly room of the County Building to organize a permanent Safety Council for Shafter and outline future projects. F G Shaw will preside as chairman and representatives from service clubs schools PTAs and churches are expected. Progress reports include an oiled walk project between Shafter and the north Shafter Labor Camp.
Kiwanis Sponsored Marble Tourney at The marble tournament Saturday saw Bob Vandeveer take first place and a $3 prize. Thomas Holt earned $2 for second, Bob Burns $1 for third, with Dwainé Mendenhall fifth and I R Simonson sixth. Fred Hasty registered 94 entries. 60 started. Four rounds of eliminations determined winners. Ned Smith reported excellent shooting.
Bob Talbert remains in recovery at home after a Bakersfield automobile crash that left his companion Ralph Webb of Wasco dead. The incident occurred around 1 30 a m with Talbert unconscious for a period before regaining consciousness. The mother Mrs. D Talbert provided the update on February 16.
Rapid progress on the Park improvements includes graded ground and sprinkler pipe works supervised by Percy Branson and Dan Loewen. After completion, grass planting and landscaping follow with public rest rooms, barbecue pits, tables and benches planned and an outdoor stage proposed for bands or plays near the Legion Hall and Woman's club.
A stolen car case from Shafter in 1944 concluded with the arrest of J. C. Harvey. His preliminary hearing in Bakersfield last week resulted in him being bound over for Superior Court trial.
Railroad officials urge repeal of the 1911 Full Crew Law ahead of a state legislature vote next month. They argue the rule is outdated, based on 1911 train structures, and would not cut jobs as workers would shift to other needed roles.
Correcting a recent Press count, fifteen cotton gins now operate from Shafter. The Garrisons and Son gin at Earlimart was omitted, changing the box score to Coberly-West 7, L A Camp 4, Smith Garrison 3, Shafter-Wasco 1. Garrison toured Dallas and Memphis securing equipment for a new gin west of Shafter and arranged cotton buying for the next season.
