Shafter plans redevelopment meeting and zoning debate
City leaders and merchants scheduled a March 3 meeting at City Hall to discuss redevelopment feasibility and zoning changes. Acting administrator Guinn outlined cost estimates, potential industrial areas, and revenue implications while planning staff consider water issues and annexation options.

Richland School District hears SCICON trip reports
At the February 18 meeting the Richland School District reviewed the December SCICON field trip to the mountains. Ninety six students attended the program Conservation a Responsibility of Each American with background talks by Veronica Garza Cynthia Brown Shawna Prentice Chris Montoya Sonny Reyna Steve Garza and others. A panel and slideswere shown. teachers Cynthia Silliman Mike Schmidt and Mike Svilich assisted. A campus climate study for 3rd-6th graders was approved. The consent calendar updated the 1985-86 calendar for days cancelled in 1985 86 and minimum days for students. Eighth grade graduation was set for June 17. A sexual abuse prevention program funding and staffing changes were discussed with plans to implement paid volunteers this year. The board also addressed contract talks with CSEA and employment actions. The next meeting is March 3 at 7:30 p.m. in the Music Building.

City of Shafter sewer system overview and costs
The City of Shafter operates 30 miles of sewer lines, three pumping plants and one treatment plant. This year the system will transport treat and dispose of over 365 million gallons of sewage. Operating and maintenance costs total 166 617 dollars with labor 63 461 and electricity 43 670. Public Works Director John Cuinn urges water conservation to lower costs and notes rates remain very low compared to the valley, urging leak repair and shutoff of faucets.
