Only one week remains to register for the April 14 city election with the deadline set for Thursday March 5. Voters who did not participate in the last general election or who have moved must register at City Hall with City Clerk Frank Shaw.
A first aid class for all Boy Scouts in Shafter will start tomorrow evening at the Scout building on the elementary school grounds off Lerdo road. Dr. A. W. Gaede will lead the instruction and all interested Scouts are urged to attend.
A recent labor wage survey by Farm Advisor M. A. Lindsay analyzes irrigation, tractor, pruning, general farm, and onion thinning pay across Shafter Arvin Buttonwillow Delano Edison Rosedale Wasco. County and local committees aim to address farm labor shortages with wage data guiding planning. Additional county surveys on labor and housing will follow.
Kern county potato growers in Shafter and surrounding areas are urged to place immediate orders for bags through their suppliers to ensure supply for the 1942 crop. H L Pomeroy, back from Washington meetings, said government officials promised bag availability and an official War Productions board order supports this. Representatives of the Potato Growers and Shippers association and Kern County Farm Bureau press for timely contracts with bag companies and burlap bag supplies for San Joaquin valley crops.
Five shoats were killed by a pack of dogs Monday night at the Alvin Mettler ranch south of town on Riverside drive between Shafter highway and Santa Fe way. Officers issued warnings to local ranchers to guard against further raids by the dog pack and reminded that owners are responsible for damage from roaming dogs even if licensed.
A committee is scheduled for the afternoon of March 4 at 1 30 o clock in the agricultural building Bakersfield.
In a violent dog incident several carcasses were left unharmed as the pack turned aggressive. Authorities say even pet dogs can go wild in packs and urge disposing of the animals to prevent further damage.
Unofficial reports indicate Continental Oil Co is drilling near 10 000 feet on the Neuman and Lachenmaier lease north of Shafter. The well is being redrilled at Be h n bet or tare aa Pant 9 890 feet, with activity focused in the vicinity.

Local tire rationing officials announced a freeze on recaps with expected implementation around March. Actual rationing depends on forms reaching board members, likely delaying availability until near March. New car release applications closed today with action deferred until after March 1. An anticipated national allocation of 425000 new cars may be available for rationing in April through June.
Walter Pollack district WPA recreation supervisor visited Shafter and said funds may cover rent for the army recreation center on James Street next to the post office. The site is designated a certified army defense area for recreation, with rent potentially handled by WPA after two months if use is sufficient. Local committee work refinished and furnished the building with WPA help. utilities would be handled by the community if WPA covers rent.
The Shafter community faces alerts as shells fall on California soil and a Santa Barbara oilfield is shelled. Volunteers are urged to staff 24 hour listening posts at Henderson and Zachary ranches with shifts of four hours and a plan to pair family members for coverage.
A tax adviser will answer questions about the 1942 California income tax return at the Shafter Wasco Irrigation District office tomorrow from 9 to 5. Bring forms and exemptions questions. advice only, forms not filled out.
A Superior Court hearing date for the TegarGine dissolution of the Shafter-Wasco Irrigation District is expected to be set within days. The district board meets Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the district office on Santa Fe Way.

County warden Art Craig issued a final warning against night burning of trash this week. He cites violations of city and county rules and blackout measures, noting a $300 fine and 300 days in jail for burning during a blackout. He urges residents to stop fires after 9 PM as civilian defense alerts loom.
Senior air raid wardens and alternates will meet at 8 o clock this evening in the assembly room of the county building on Pacific avenue. Chief of Police John Reily, head of civilian defense in Sector G, announces the gathering for additional instruction and reviews of past training.
The Shafter city council introduced a gas company franchise for the Southern California Gas Co for an indeterminate period. The measure promises city gains and potential termination if a municipal gas system is created or terms unmet.
A group of Shafter business men will join county peers next Wednesday at the El Tejon hotel to discuss attracting defense contracts and industry to Kern county. Supervisor A. W. Noon will depart for Washington to present county info and pursue civilian defense and industry interests.
