January employment peaks while unemployment rises
State labor reports show civilian employment at 7,944,000 in January, a 2.6 percent gain from 1969 but unemployment at 460,000, up from December and last year. Weather and after-holiday cuts offset growth, with manufacturing and outdoor trades affected by aerospace, construction, and agricultural declines. A separate Kern County break-in in Shafter saw a portable color television and a pistol stolen from Mrs. Wilma Bell’s home on February 21.
