Shafter residents prepare for a community-wide tin can drive on Saturday March 6. Volunteers from the Boy Scouts assist by flattening cans for collection and transport to Bakersfield loading bins before shipment to Arizona copper mines. Each 1.25 pounds of cans yields one pound of copper.
Horace T. Strong of the University of California Extension Service urges urban families to raise rabbits for meat as a supplement to scarce other sources. He notes three does can yield about 100 pounds of meat yearly and warns against heat sensitivity without shade and airflow. Strong advises firstTimers contact local extension offices for guidance.
The Farm Security Administration offers loans to eligible full time farmers and others in need of funds for livestock equipment and operation expenses. Loans carry five percent interest and may be repaid within twelve months for operating costs, with stock loans potentially extended over two or three years. Abraham J Regier 73 died Sunday night February 21 at Kern General Hospital He was born in Russia and had lived in the Shafter community about 12 years Funeral services will be at the First Mennonite church Saturday February 27 at 2 pm with Rev Arthur Wenger officiating Burial will be in Shafter Cemetery He is survived by his widow Lena a foster daughter Mrs Elma Milijarak of Reno Nevada and a number of nieces and nephews

Luther Franklin Cornelius, 62, died at his home on Grant Street Sunday February 21. Born in Alabama on June 22, 1881 he lived in Shafter ten years. Funeral services will be Friday at 2 p m at Janzen Funeral chapel with Rev Orval Seago and Rev Neal Dirke officiating. Interment in Shafter cemetery. Survived by wife Victoria five sons Luther Eliott Ira Howard Tillman Uisla one daughter Norene Barry brothers Willie Walter Arthur three sisters Myrtle Ada Dillingham Minnie Miller and 17 grandchildren.

Jacob Doerksen died at his home on February 18 at age 78. Born August 16, 1864 in Russia, he lived in the area for years. Funeral services were held February 24 at 2 p m at First Mennonite Church with Rev. Arthur Wenger officiating. Burial followed at Shafter cemetery. Survived by wife Margaret a daughter Elizabeth Epp of Saskatchewan Canada a son Nichols Doerksen of Detroit Michigan and one grandchild.
