The Trade Board reports average population increases in Kern County from 1950 to 1960 at 27.89 percent. The study highlights dilapidated houses in incorporated cities Taft Wasco and Shafter with gains of 16.1 12.3 and 11 percent respectively.
Mary Carmen Strelich of the School of Modeling Persons in Bakersfield and Sar joined the group as guests during a district wide career day. The events emphasized active participation and community involvement for seniors.

Art Brownell son of Mr and Mrs Arthur Brownell 408 Oak Street named Kern County representative for the annual Report to the Nation He competes with western area scouters for a chance to visit Washington D C The event takes place at the Party Center in Bakersfield Brownell is active at Shafter High School where he serves as student body executive board and leads in sports He holds Eagle Scout rank and has three years as junior assistant program director at Camp Kern He is a Kiwanis Cut sponsor and Block S Club member and is president of the wae ge Art group.
Business and Professional Women of Shafter led by Miss Nina Francis organize to canvas homes for the Red Cross Roll Call during March 5 to 10. Teams led by Francis and others will cover areas, with local businesses contacted by Keneth Anderson’s committee. The drive supports disaster relief and veteran services, stressing broad local contributions and participation.
A class writes to the local March of Dimes chairperson pledging to give their Valentines Day money to fighting polio birth defects and other health goals. The letter notes the aim to support the March of Dimes efforts against poliomyelitis and related issues.
At the Lions Club meet on Wednesday three contestants prepare for a speak-off on February 21 at Veterans Memorial Hall. Janis Morse Mike Johnston and Lloyd Gardiner will present. Winners advance to a zone contest in Shafter March 14 then region and district finals for a 1500 scholarship. Program chairman Roland Grisham introduces the event.
Lloyd Kroeker of Nikkel Iron Works returned to Shaf after a one week advanced technical course at the Massey Ferguson Service Training Center in Detroit Michigan. The program updates dealers on service techniques and maintenance for the company’s expanding lines of farm and industrial equipment.
