Leo B. Hart former Kern County school superintendent spoke on Korea as Advisor to the U S Department of Education. He described Japanese rule since 1910, limited Korean participation in government and industry, Korea's 23 million people in a narrow area, and postwar factory damage while under Allied surrender. The luncheon meeting at Cawelo Motel featured visiting Rotarians and Supervisor Ardis Walker.
Ed Merkel has returned to 633 Pacific Avenue from a Los Angeles hospital after a major operation. He thanks friends for remembrances received during illness and recuperation.
A Teen-Age dance hosted by Leslie L. Robinson Post 213 American Legion and chaired by N. F. Waymire unfolds at the Woman's Club House. Bill Earley’s orchestra provides music after the Shafter Wasco High basketball game around 9 30 p.m with chaperones and police at the door.

Robinson Post 213 American Legion will initiate over 50 new members at 8 pm Monday February 21 at the Woman's Club House in Shafter Taft Post 70 will conduct the ceremony with Roy Driggers Bakersfield district commander in attendance He will speak briefly A social hour and party will follow the initiation with N F Waymire overseeing refreshments and entertainment.
Henry H. Neufeld a Shafter pioneer died at 60 in a Bakersfield hospital after 23 years residence. He leaves a widow Suzie Anna and five children Elsie Smoot Raymond Ernest Marlin and Eugene. Funeral services will be at 1 30 p m at the Mennonite Brethren church Shafter with burial in Shafter Cemetery.
Lee Thomas, commander of the Leslie L. Robinson post in Shafter, is praised for his administration as he serves as Veterans Housing Chairman for the 15th District Department of California. His appointment was approved at Marysville on January 15-16, and he began duties at the Bakersfield district meeting January 30. Thomas, trained in Army Infantry and later Ordance, served a year in World War II with six months overseas.
Shafter City Council abolished indiscriminate soliciting by out of town peddlers under a new Green River ordinance. The council also talked on a resuscitator cost share with Kern County Fire, enclosed the lower siren tower for safety, placed garbage cans along Central Avenue, and postponed a new police car purchase due to unavailable models. Mayor McClure and all four councilmen attended.
The Shafter Potato Festival Committee announced a poster contest for grades 6 to 8 in Richland Maple Rio Bravo and Lerdo schools to promote the May 21 festival. Posters sized 14 by 20 inches may win school prizes, with a grand prize for the best poster from each school.
Kern County Land Company, developer of the Shafter Colony, agrees to waive the land revert clause on the Union Congregational Church site to aid funding for a new church building. The company historically donated school and public site land and remains active in Shafter’s growth.
The Kern County Tuberculosis and Health Association sent a Mobile X-ray Unit to Shafter High School on Monday for students and staff. The unit also visited Richland School on Tuesday and County Building in Shafter on Wednesday for free examinations, drawing many adults and residents from the area.
Morgan opens Art Morgan Car Lot at 103 Santa Fe Way in Shafter, with plans to split time between Shafter and Porterville. He chose Shafter for its central valley location and strong business outlook, promising immediate delivery on most makes and models. He plans to establish a residence here for himself and his parents.
Bob Haag, winner of Starring Kern County Artists, will give a recital Monday evening February 21 at Union Congregational Church with Florine Tinnin soprano and Bruce Muir pianist. Mrs Ethel McManus Schafer tutored Muir in Bakersfield. Bird whistling act by Mrs Hein forth. Proceeds fund a Kimball piano. free-will offering invited. General chairmen are Mrs Ed Brown and Mrs J H Fuller.
The Shafter Junior Women's Club hosts a benefit circus dance at the Woman's Club House tomorrow from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. Proceeds go to Kern County Chapter of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis. Dinner-for-two door prize from West's Dining Room Wasco. Music by Bakersfield's Jack Bertrand Orchestra. Numerous local merchants donate prizes for the booths and raffles.
The Shafter Motel Coffee Shop opened this week after a full renovation. Owner Ralph Boels says it offers a full breakfast from 7 am, fast noon service for workers, and an evening dinner menu. The shop features new equipment, a large counter, table service, and quick items like sandwiches and coffee.
The Shafter Public Utility District explains the recent water rate rise citing rising material costs and general price inflation. Directors note prior increases and warn a fire at low pressure would threaten containment without higher rates. A new well pump contract was awarded to Shafter Pump & Machine Co. for 6777.75 dollars to install a Lane & Bowler pump.
The Womens' Fellowship of the Congregational Church will hold a food sale at the Post Office Market on Saturday February 19 from 10 00 a m to 12 00 noon. Chairman is Mrs John Jacobsen. Women members should bring contributions by 9 30 a m.
The Crusade for Christ at the First Baptist Church ends Sunday evening with Rev. George Siemens preaching "The First Step to Salvation." Attendance has been strong, the visitation program challenged the church, and several services neared seating capacity prompting early arrival for a seat.
At Corcoran last week the quarterly gathering reported progress on the Central Valley Highway project. Attendees from Shafter included W. H. Hitchcock J. C. Penner Wilbur Stocker and Irvin E. Fike. Charles Chambers of Hanford presided. the group promotes linking Bakersfield and Fresno via Shafter Wasco Corcoran Hanford and Selma with ongoing surface improvements.
