Lights Go Out City Sunday In East Section
A Sunday outage left the East of the Santa Fe tracks and nearby farms dark from 4:40 PM to 11 PM. Lights returned intermittently from 8:50 PM starting on Tulare Avenue, with Cherry Avenue homes last to regain power after copper wire damage by hunters using .22 rifles. Patrols covered forty to fifty miles of wiring before repairs were completed.

Shafter Chamber Opposes Travel Carnival Plans
At a Friday meeting in Shafter Motel the Shafter Chamber of Commerce voted against allowing traveling carnivals in the city. The group directed letters to the city council and American Legion post opposing the carnival and approved a billboard program for two 7 by 21 foot signs along Highway 99 promoting Shafter with Central Valley Highway branding. Vincent Sign Company of Hanford secured the contract. Central Valley Highway Association will help cover maintenance of one sign. Phil Channeson chairs the sign committee. Kern County convention set for March 3 in Bakersfield will include chamber representation.
