Cavasos spoke to a large SHS audience about her family history and Hispanic roots. She described her father’s three years in the United States, settling in Arvin Lamont, and her own early language struggles. She recounted pursuing counseling and teaching, noting how helping friends in high school shaped her path.
Local Shafter woman Sarah Jones earned a chance to circumnavigate the globe aboard a University of Pittsburgh vessel hosting the Semester at Sea program. The 100 day voyage began September 1998 from Vancouver with 600 students, stopping in nine countries. Jones, a Shafter High School graduate now in Cal State Bakersfield Honors, kept a high GPA while completing country interviews and concerts for course credits.
City Manager John Guinn says state delays on RFPs keep Shafter on hold while officials assess if a communal facility makes financial and community sense. Wasco explores private options. Shafter prefers public ownership and will hold meetings if an RFP materializes.
