Organizers plan a parade queen barbecue and rodeo for the potato festival with the 20 30 Club running the wild West show and the American Legion handling the barbecue. Orvin Mettler urges parade refinement and better ticket sales. Directors discuss advance promotions, possible concessions, and revenue splits among groups.
Shafter's sixth annual Community Chest campaign trails by 2300 dollars with 2.5 days left. Campaign director Earl Weil says a board meeting will determine steps if the goal of 5200 is not reached, with possible pro rata distribution to six youth organizations including the YMCA Campfire Girls and Boy Scouts.
Olson, superintendent of Richland School district, will resign effective June 1 after two years in the role. He noted the district’s growth from 400 pupils in 1928 with 15 teachers to today serving hundreds daily, a rise in valuation from 1.415 million to about 24 million chiefly due to oil. The district now uses buses daily and employs custodians and bus drivers.
Members of the American Legion will hold their annual membership drive dinner Monday in the Veterans Memorial. Légionnaires only, the event is arranged by Earl John, membership committee chair. The 1950 paid-up member card is the ticket to admit.
Filing for two city council seats ends March 2. Current holders are Mayor Paul V. McClure and Adolf Kirchenmann. The treasurer Lincoln Goddard resigned last September, leaving one vacancy from prior to fill.

Kern County will spend about 63000 to repair the rundown West Lerdo Highway from Palm Avenue to Rowlee Road, a seven mile stretch. Work is set to begin this spring with surveying already started. County road officials said landscaping the East Lerdo Highway center strip with Oleander is not in the plan.

The Shafter High School PTA schedules a minstrel show next Thursday and Friday in Veterans Memorial Hall chaired by Mrs. Joe Frizzell. About 40 performers, all Shafterites, will present dance routines including modern swing, a Charleston trio, jitterbug, and soft shoe numbers led by Betty Peters, Blanche Hill, Cathryn Putman, Mildred Clarkin, Pat Neuman, Edna Rogers, Betty Lund, and Marjorie Rose with Mona Vee Moor in tap specialty.
Kiwanis announces the annual youth basketball tournament to be held March 4 at Shafter High School. About 150 students from Maple, Shafter, Lerdo, and Rio Bravo will compete with Bert Ware and Bill Carpenter leading the event.
The council ordered enforcement of parking regulations in the downtown area between Munzer Street and Santa Fe and California and Pacific, with one hour limits in effect, except Sundays and legal holidays. Police will issue citations for violations.
Shafter council eyed a $37 667 bid from Anderson Company Visalia for the Manuel Tulare sidewalk project. City engineer John Ves to study offers and make recommendation after bids showed a $50 532 estimate. Second lowest was Rand Construction Bakersfield at 60 612 with Reeves noting Anderson’s local projects. Annexation moves proceed as Kirschenmann and Weinberger tracts advance toward city inclusion.
Ardis M. Walker, first district supervisor, urged a mass meeting of all sides in the farm labor camp controversy. Two youths Richard A. Lind 19 and Ames Harold Watley 22 both farm laborers are held in Shafter jail for removal to Texas where they will face grand theft auto charges, Police John Riley reported.

Garry Wey a 13 year old eighth grader from Richland School earned selection to represent Troop 53 and Shafter at the national jamboree in Valley Forge this summer. A Star Scout he works toward Life rank wearing nine merit badges and pursuing five more while balancing athletics public speaking health and skills like first aid swimming woodwork and cooking.
