Shafter Budget Review Shows Small Surplus Potential
City officials praised a budget with less than 1 percent variance as sales tax growth boosts revenue to about 11000 over the original plan. Expenses run 3 percent under budget, with a possible 14000 reserve surplus if trends continue, as Mayor Prout honored Gretchen Handel and the junior miss program. Nearby Wasco resolution 89 1152 to boycott the San Francisco conference drew support from most council members except mayor pro tem Nash.

Audrey Kay Bender Memorial Scholarship Established
Complications from a vehicle accident caused the death of Audrey Kay Bender, 21, last year. A memorial scholarship fund at California State University Bakersfield endows support for international economics studies. Bender, daughter of Donald and Donna Bender of Shafter, attended Maple School and Shafter High School and studied economics at CSUB. She was a registered lobbyist in Bakersfield with Charles Schwab. CSUB economics chair Dr. Mark O Evans aims for a permanent endowment of 5,000 with half already pledged. Contributions should be sent to Cal State Bakersfield.
