Housing a major step in hurricane evacuee recovery
FEMA winds down its hotel and motel program after funding over 3.3 million room nights to aid tens of thousands of hurricane evacuees from Katrina and Rita. Since landfall, FEMA paid more than $522 million for lodging as part of over $6 billion in aid to nearly 1.5 million victims. At the peak, 85,000 rooms were used in one night. Acting Director David Paulison said the program provided safe temporary homes while long-term housing was arranged. About 92 percent of the remaining evacuees in hotels are in Alabama Florida Georgia Louisiana Mississippi and Texas. An outreach push aimed to ensure subsidies funded rental options and not abuse of disaster funds.
