This is the 14th in a series of Shafter Press articles focusing on Kern County water issues. Editors note that the pieces reflect local leaders' thinking and may guide future action on important public matters.
Kern County spearheads a statewide battle for water development with leaders Allen Bottorff John Peters and Forrest Frick pushing for rapid action. The aim is to secure state commitment and funding to start the San Luis Reservoir unit of the Feather River Project, delivering water to Southern California and aiding drought‑prone Kern lands.
Robert Doss was named general chairman of the 1958 Heart Fund drive for Shafter, with John Loustalot as countywide chair. The February solicitation campaign was set at a recent dinner meeting attended by about 50 heart group leaders. Odd Fellows and Rebekah Lodges joined in sponsoring the drive as a statewide community service.
An important meeting of the Shafter Merchants Division is called for Tuesday at 7 o'clock at Burnett Furniture Store. A C Burnett, president, urges all merchants to be present.
Kern county health officials announce the final rabies clinic in Shafter on February 8 at the county fire station from 1 to 4 30 p.m. Dr. Buss says no more clinics needed as county efforts lead to a non endemic rabies area. Dog owners should bring pets for shots and licenses. price for combined service is 2 60.
Bill Bishop chief county appraiser told Shafter Kiwanis club that county tax re evaluation will raise taxes by as much as 33 percent in 1959. The board of equalization plan sets real estate to present value with 25 percent of that value used for tax figures. New homes may be estimated at eight dollars per square foot plus extras.
Judge E K Grant of the Shafter Judicial court plans retirement once a replacement is found. Two incumbents have taken the qualifying exam. Grant, a Kern county pioneer, has served since July 1944, guiding youth with religious philosophy and scouting while working as a building inspector and justice official.
Ruben F. Mettler, Shafter-born scientist and vice president of Ramo-Wooldridge, coordinates the Air Force missile program from Los Angeles. He outlines the aim to assemble missiles with 300 000 parts including airframe engine nose cone warhead and guidance system while keeping plans secret.
Six Shafter High School students will join the all county honor orchestra and three students will perform in the chorus at a February 15 recital in Harvey Auditorium Bakersfield Irvin announced. Auditions were held in fall and the group held its first rehearsal Saturday.
Shafter polio drive nears the $1000 mark as March of Dimes chair Kerneth Anderson reports totals through February 1. Last week March of Mothers raised $465, with Blue Crutch Drive and Line of Dimes at $170. Other gifts include $85 from Coffee Day and $76 from local juke boxes. Bowling Night and Lions game add $31 and $28.
Shafter hosts Corcoran Panthers Friday and Porterville Saturday in South Sequoia League play. The Generals aim for a seventh straight league win against Corcoran while aiming to secure a top spot with two more victories. Colonels seek fifth league win after a 4 2 start. Wasco game details noted with Wasco Tigers edging Wasco Cubs 45 39 in a prior matchup.
Two candidates, Lewis J. Woodard and Blaker Witcher, have taken the qualifying examination for the Shafter Judicial district bench to replace retiring Judge E. K. Grant. If they pursue the race, the election would be next December while the board of supervisors appoints a interim judge. Witcher took the exam at Mercy Hospital Bakersfield, bedridden with a back injury.
The Shafter Exchange Club announced a trip for youths to Bakersfield on Saturday February 15 to view a Bakersfield Police crime prevention exhibit and film with a lecture. The event aligns with Crime Prevention Week February 9 to 15. Dave Cook, Richland schools chairman, will arrange guardian chaperones. consent slips must be signed.

Twelve burglaries across Shafter and county during a week alarm police chief John Reily who reports the spree began January 26 with two filling stations and spread to shops including French's Market where cash and cigars were stolen. Tools, car parts, and loose change were seized at various sites. Police urge residents to keep lights on and report suspicious activity as squads operate around the clock.
Frank Johnson of Maple Leaf will be guest speaker Thursday noon before the Christian Business Men's committee. The Veterans Memorial Hall hosts the event with CBMCI inviting all, regardless of denomination. Last week Dr Vernon Grounds discussed practical applications of Christian living.
William Lowe auditor for the L. A. Camp companies spoke at the Shafter Rotary Club Tuesday noon, discussing taxes for members and guests.
The new Shafter chamber of commerce and agriculture board held its first meeting Wednesday morning. Directors discussed objectives for 1958, with President Joe Salee outlining the agenda and direction.
