Shafter High names new head football coach Manuel Garcia

Shafter High School selects Manuel Garcia as head football coach for 2004-05 after seven candidates. Quinonez cites Garcia as an outstanding, well qualified leader who will uphold the Generals football tradition and improve the players experience. Garcia, a SHS graduate and local product, has 14 years coaching at various levels and currently serves as an outreach liaison at the school.

Shafter shelter helps pets find homes this week

Shafter's Animal Control Manager Shyanne Bozarth leads a drive to place pets in foster and permanent homes. The community effort highlights the shelter's work to reduce shelter population and improve animal welfare through outreach and adoption events.

Shafter to Launch Annual Vehicle Abatement Program

Shafter will begin its annual Abatement Program to remove abandoned and inoperative vehicles threatening health and safety. Sergeant Greg Richardson leads the effort, tagging vehicles and sending Notice of Vehicle Abatement by certified mail. Vehicle owners have 10 days to remove or properly store the vehicle, or the city may tow it as a public nuisance and then sell it for tow and storage fees.

Chamber celebrates 58 years with banquet and awards

The Shafter Chamber of Commerce marked its 58th annual Installation and Awards Banquet at the Veteran's Hall with City Manager John Guinn as MC. Incoming president Glenda Mathis accepted the gavel from outgoing president Don Handel, as officers Dustin Hooper Richard Fabric Robert Gonzalez Jesus Hernandez Roy Root and Melinda Wood were announced. Recipients included Katie Bergen Young Person of the Year Dennis Handel Person of the Year Don Luna Business of the Year Ronda Martin Community Service Award Shafter Community Chest Humanitarian of the Year Dolores Robinson Citizen of the Year.

California bill aims to fund developmentally disabled services

A new California Assembly bill by Patricia Wiggins to set minimum state funding for developmentally disabled services passed 53 to 9 and moves to the Senate. It requires any future increases in federal funds to supplement state programs under the Lanterman Act, starting in 2004-05, with CSO Bakersfield area clients led by John Stockton praising the measure amid recent budget cuts.
