Busby Named Farm Placement Agent For Kern County

Floyd Byrnes of the California Department of Employment announces Kern County appointments. Floyd B Busby formerly with the California Agricultural Extension Service in Bakersfield becomes farm placement representative. He will operate from Bakersfield at 1300 Seventeenth Street. Shafter Cagers Top Wasco In Big Upset 29-21

Shafter varsity basketball pulled off a major upset by defeating Wasco 29 to 21 Friday night. Led by Keet Duke and strong defense, Shafter used a 13-point surge in the third quarter to seize command, while John Nikkel Don Long and Roy Packard starred on floor play and rebounding. Duke scored 10 points to lead Wasco, as Wasco struggled against Shafter’s zone and held to a low total.

Wasco B Squad Subdues Locals in Rough Contest

The Wasco B team defeated Shafter lightweights 34 to 18 after a tight first half 15 to 10. Several fouls and near flare-ups marred the game led by Baker 8, Rankin 7, and new man 7 for Wasco while Shafter’s Fred Houston John Howard Hughes and Tom and John Kelly led locals with five for John Kelly.

Shatter High Students Receive Free TB X-Rays

Chest X-rays were performed on about 425 students at Shatter High School on Tuesday by the Kern County Tuberculosis and Health Association with parental approval. absentees were scanned the next day at Santa Fe School.

Opera La Boheme Opens Kern County Music Series

La Boheme opens the Kern County Music Association 1948 series on October 18 at Bakersfield High School auditorium. San Francisco Opera Company with Jan Peerce Bidu Sayao and Ezio Pinza will perform with a 60 member orchestra and full staging. Frank Hornkohl says the event is likely to sell out as tickets go on sale by mail order at Tracy's Music Store.

Nelson Named Business Manager of Shafter Press

Walter C. Nelson becomes business manager of the Shafter Press announced by owner Paul Newell. He previously headed the Press print shop since July and has another career in Midwest publishing and the Los Angeles Times. He served in wartime at Minter Field and returned to Shafter after 1945.

Clean-up campaign launched at Shafter High School

The student body executive board started a campus clean-up drive at Shafter High School following a Tuesday meeting. The Horizon Club and the Hi V clubs will lead with a joint committee of Betty Taylor Virginia Frizzell Wayne Hill and Tom Kelly coordinating. The effort begins with an assembly tomorrow and includes club skits a movie and cash prizes for top posters jingles and slogans.

Deadline Nears For Auto License Renewals in California

An estimated 400000 California motorists and 50000 non residents have not yet renewed 1948 auto licenses. The February 4 deadline looms with risks of penalties 100 percent on registration and 50 percent on in lieu taxes after that date. A $22 license would rise to $36 post deadline.
