The Shafter Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture plans its 1956 installation banquet at Shafter High School Cafetorium next Wednesday night. Dr. Arnold E. Joyal of Fresno State College will be the featured speaker, with Melvin Baddin and a college ensemble providing music. Dignitaries expected include Roy Woollames H W Pat Kelly Dorothy Donahoe and Jess Dorsey. Tickets cost 2.50 and Merton L. Wiedmann will be installed as president with Don Zachary and Bob Somers as vice president and secretary.

The Santa Fe station will gain a pay telephone after joint effort by the chamber of commerce and the telephone company. Chamber Secretary Robert Somers says requests in the past month prompted the installation to help patrons call home about arrivals or departures if trains are late.

The Richland Elementary district officially withdrew from the Kern County school library system effective June 30 to build its own library. Superintendent Bruce Crawford says the county setup costs about 5000 dollars annually. The new library, overseen by Pete Bergen, is slated to open with the upcoming school term. construction cost is estimated at 78000 dollars with Genevieve Craig as librarian.

Jr Golden Gloves Finalists Scheduled At Shafter High
Plans were set for the first ten gloves event at Shafter High School gym Saturday at 7 30 p m. Tom Bushey chairs the committee and the Block S sponsors the tournament featuring 20 finalists in 11 one minute bouts. Proceeds fund sports equipment. Finalists receive awards and champions win golden gloves while runners up take silver gloves. Belts buckles are given to all finalists and two boys may win special eight inch trophies for outstanding bout. Referee Steve Strelich judges Jack Manweiler William Lachenmaier and Dr Harold Freedman attend as physician. Admission 75 cents adults 25 cents students children. Finalists were chosen from aspirants who competed earlier in the week.

Evansville fugitive shot by Shafter police in chase
William Farrer 30, wanted on an Evansville armed robbery warrant, was shot nine times and injured in Shafter while fleeing arrest. Assistant Chief Hanley Witcher and Patrolman Glenn Holt pursued him after he broke from a police car door opening, then took him to Kern General Hospital for a bullet wound in the left calf. Farrer had reportedly jumped a $10,000 bond in Indiana.

Shafter District Seeks Annexation for Future School Site
The Shafter school board agreed to annex a 17 1 2 acre parcel east of the city for the future third school and to allow annexation of adjacent land for 40 homes. City officials and utility representatives said water and sewer lines must extend with annexation, and a formal meeting is planned. The site is bounded by State Avenue Elm Street and Pine Street.

Shafter Youth First to Choose Six Month Training Option
James Clinton Everett a 17 year old senior at Shafter High is the first Kern county youth to use the six month training option under the Reserve Forces act. He has enlisted in the 250th Transportation Company and will attend weekly training assemblies at the Bakersfield Reserve Training Center. After graduation he begins six months active duty starting with basic training at Fort Ord followed by eight weeks at Fort Eustis and ongoing unit and specialized training.

Planning Commission To Re zone Shafter for orderly growth
