California Lawmakers Propose Bills Costing Taxpayers Millions
During the first half of the 1939 session, California legislators proposed 3 995 bills that would cost taxpayers about 100 million dollars more. They sought 25 new state boards and commissions, raised salaries for judicial and county staff, added new jobs, and advanced various tax increases and state-building plans. A later session could bring two more bills each, with taxes likely rising and public expenses increasing unless opposition grows.

A 300 acre poison campaign boosted quail numbers 154 percent from 1936 to 1937, while 350 acres without poison rose 45 percent, suggesting rodent control could aid fall hunts in Kern County.
