Early blooms mark warm spell and winter’s edge
Judy and Walt Bergen describe an unusual warm spell with lows in the low 70s and frost risk into February. They note saucer magnolias blooming in Bakersfield and at the Ag Research Station, early daffodils, violets, Euryops, bergenia, purple irises, bougainvillea, and roses thriving despite cold snaps, with February bringing blooming trees like evergreen pear and almond varieties.

Sheriff Mack Wimbish outlines Kern County youth program
Sheriff Mack Wimbish from Kern County Sheriff’s Department spoke to Kiwanis about the new Sheriff’s Activity League Program aimed at steering teens away from gangs. The program offers computer access for homework and trips, including potential Washington DC experiences, with Wasco launching it three weeks ago to strong responses. The department, hampered by past budget cuts, now has new funding and aims to add positions and 24 hour operations at Lerdo Jail with upgraded cameras as federal support grows. Kevin Monsma highlighted Kiwanis’ community focus on children through books and classroom reading as part of serving families. The 2006 Shafter Health & Fitness Fair is scheduled for April 28 from 2 to 5:30 pm at the Richland Activity Center, sponsored by multiple local organizations, offering immunizations, child ID badges, prizes, and health information.
