The board of directors of Community National Bank announced a dividend of 4 dollars per share. Shareholders on record as of December 24 will receive the payment, as the Kern County institution cites rapid growth and a focus on home owned banking services.
The Shafter Press says it will discontinue carrier delivery to Shafter homes with the January 6 issue. Subscriptions must be prepaid per postal rules, and paid subscribers will receive copies via the U S Postal Service beginning January 6. Newsstands will stock copies as usual.
The DeLuxe Barbers hold a 3 0 record to top the Shafter Adult Basketball League standings with Nick's Drive-In at 2 0. Schedule notes include December 29 and January 5 games featuring Ranch Market Faculty Hitchcock's T & B Nick's Stables and DeLuxe, with several forfeit results listed among scores.
Funeral service for Charles Thomas Cofield will be Thursday at Armstrong Flickenger Mortuary Bakersfield followed by burial at Greenlawn Cemetery He farmed near Shafter for about 26 years born December 10 1875 in North Carolina died December 25 1959 at 8 pm He is survived by wife Minnie May four sons Robert Gene Bill and Lloyd all of Shafter three daughters Geraldine Workman Barbara Cofield and Meardine Beck of Washington and 23 grandchildren.
Fifty Christmas baskets were prepared and distributed to area families through cooperative effort of Shafter service clubs and civic volunteers. Contributions came from Richland school youths Camp Fire Girls and local clubs. Each basket valued about 15 dollars feeding three to thirteen people with hams and large articles. Reg Hammond led the basket operation with Jack Janzen of the American Legion assisting.
A new speed law takes effect January 1 making 65 mph the maximum on California highways. Driving even one mile over 65 will be illegal, while the basic speed law remains allowing arrest for unsafe driving based on conditions. Other limits at railroad crossings and in business residential or school zones stay in place.
Rio Bravo P T A delivered three Christmas baskets prepared by Welfare chairwoman Mrs. James Turner with meat vegetables staples a Christmas tree and a gift for each child. President Mrs. John Walker notes a potluck dinner for the school band before the Bakersfield Christmas Parade.
Wayne Wood, new airman of the Merchant's Division of the Shafter Chamber of ree, announced plans for the next session meeting Tuesday January 5. All merchants division members are urged to attend and share opinions to start the New Year well, at the City Fire Station at 7:30 p.m.
An insurance underwriter from San Francisco spent Monday inspecting Shafter's fire apparatus and equipment. Also announced is the completion of training on the new fire truck by Vernon Pierce Mel Vaux Don Little Chuck Firkins Ralph Boehr and Edwin Bender.
Kern County Free Library plans new fine schedule after Kern Board of Supervisors approval. Adult overdue fines rise from two to five cents daily with a maximum of one dollar. Film rental and postcard reservation fees also increase. Library reports over sixteen thousand dollars in fines and lost books last year and expects higher returns. Central branch mails about twelve hundred postcards and three hundred seventy five letters weekly to locate overdue books.
A guide for travelers to Pasadena for the New Year events. Advises routes via Highway 99 using the Palmdale interchange, notes recent street widenings aiding entry, and highlights attractions in Pasadena Altadena San Marino and nearby Arcadia including Tree Lane lights and Huntington Library hours.
Janice Luker Miss shifter of 1959 is among five contestants for the official hostess crown at the National Outstanding Young Farmers awards in Bakersfield April 4 to 6. Luker, who has won multiple honors including alternate Miss Kern County, competes with Margo Brown Taft Susan Dillon East Bakersfield High and Marcia Livesay Roxana Ray Bakersfield College students.
Eugene Handel will leave Mercy Hospital where he was treated for a heart attack and return to his Walnut Street home on Thursday after a month of hospitalization.
Ella Mae Starrh a Whittier College graduate and former Shafter High School student died suddenly December 25 in Whittier. Services are today at 3 p m in Whittier conducted by Reverend Clay. A memorial fund supports the Union Congregational Church music department in Shafter for friends wishing to contribute. She was active in church music in Whit tier Methodist Church. Family includes parents Mrs. George L Starrh and brothers Fred Starrh Shafter Louis Starrh Hanford Gerald Starrh Glendora and Irwin Starrh Livermore and sister Loa Starrh Temple City.
Kern County Board of Supervisors will discuss conveying real property to the State of California as part of its final 1959 meeting. A boundary commission meeting precedes the afternoon session to review proposed annexation of territory to the city of Shafter.
The 20 30 Club elected officers for 1960 at its last meeting with Phil Zachary named president and Rolf Jacobsen, John Notley, Harley Martin, and George Haworth filling key roles. Out-going president Jack Thompson remains noted. Installation is set for January 9 with Elmer Anderson as speaker and installer.
