Nomination papers are due January 8 for the Shafter-Wasco Irrigation District board. Directors with terms expiring in 1955 seek reelection and voting for the February 2 election runs noon to 6 pm. Incumbents J. J. Peters Jr. and Loren Voth face no opposition so far. A separate January 18 special election concerns a $100000 water distribution project with U S Bureau of Reclamation backing, urged by local chamber and district. Nomination papers are available at the district office 435 Central Avenue. Polling sites include Precinct 2 Fire Station on F Street Wasco, Precinct 3 office at Shafter Wasco Ginning Company Bea Street and Central Valley Way.

Local Druggist Improves After Critical Attack
Paul V. McClure, a Bakersfield druggist, has been in critical condition at Bakersfield hospital after a heart attack. Attendants say the crisis passed by Tuesday and he was able to take medications. Visits are not allowed at the moment as his condition stabilizes.

A traffic violator mailed a fine payment to FE Grant county building Sacramento California. The letter reached Sacramento but no F. K. Grant was at the capitol. Two days later it arrived in Judge Grant's mailbox in Shafter. The post office locating the addressee puzzled readers.

Fire Claims Seven Bales of Cotton at S A Camp Yard
A fire at the S A Camp storage yard at Pacific and Walke streets destroyed seven bales of cotton valued around 1120 as part of a 16 bale lot. Firemen saved 13 320 worth of nearby cotton awaiting shipment. Two city fire companies and 17 men fought the blaze for eight hours. Wes Jensen, the cotton gin manager, said the loss was insured.

Building Permits Reach One Million Valuation in 1954
Shafter sees building permit value top 1 million dollars for the second straight year with a total valuation of 1,094,511 in 1954 per city building inspector FE Kk Grant. The year’s work focused on residences and a single large project at Shafter high school totaling 275,381. February led with 311,431 in permits, followed by October at 160,500 and September at 115,900. December saw 64,000 in new construction and seven houses started by multiple builders.
