A joint funeral was held Saturday at Mennonite Brethren for the Hinton family who died from gas exposure in their apartment. Rev. Waldo J. Wiebe led services, with burial in Shafter cemetery. Survivors include Charles O. Cardwell and family in Shafter, and relatives in Glendale and North Hollywood.

New Ag Engineer Joins Staff of Experiment Station
Lyle Carter named agricultural engineer at United States Cotton Experiment Station in Shafter replacing Harold S. Stanton who moved to Ford Motor Company. Carter, Kern county native, trained at University of California Davis earning an agricultural engineering degree. He comes from Texas A and M where he worked on pink bollworm control before transfer by the department of agriculture. Continued on Page 4.

Uniform sales tax goes into effect in Kern County
Kern county retailers will begin charging a uniform 1 percent sales tax on top of the 3 percent state tax starting Tuesday. The California State Board of Equalization will collect the tax, with all Kern cities already imposing up to 1 percent locally.

Visiting Youths Find Shafter Not So Very Friendly
Three youths fought in daylight on Lerdo highway Christmas afternoon injuring Bobby Holmes and Chuck Firkins. Delbert Smart Gary Norris John Bryant were jailed and charged with disturbing the peace and weapon assault. Norris faced a felony case referred to the district attorney. sentences included suspended terms for good behavior. Witnesses say the fight stemmed from a dispute over Bryant keeping his car off the sidewalk.

Kiwanians Hold Christmas Party For 35 Children
The Shafter Kiwanis club hosted its annual Christmas party at the Cawelo motel on December 19. Thirty five Kiwanis children enjoyed Santa’s visit at 12 45 with gifts and songs led by Kenneth Fahsbender. The Reverend Roy Partain gave The Manger, and President Ross Harrington announced the installation banquet for January 16 at Cawelo.

Christmas Donors Back Fire Department Toy Drive

Assemblyman H W Kelly announced a new branch of the State department of motor vehicles in Shafter to issue license plates and registrations for the Shafter Wasco area. Teens Dodge Police In 110 MPH Shafter Chase
An 18 year old from Wilmington led Ival Odell Presley and two other Shafter youths on a 15 mile chase with Patrolman Glenn Holt at 110 miles per hour. The pursuit began near thal avenue and Central Valley highway and ended south of Wasco. Presley claimed he did not know he was being pursued. He was fined 143 dollars.

Shafter High to Host Second Annual Boxing Finals
On January 11 the 8 club will hold the finals of its second annual boxing tournament at 8:00 pm. Adults pay 26 cents children free with student body card. Proceeds fund athletic equipment insurance and gym gear. Contests are three one minute rounds with mouth guards and headgear.
