Pencil origins as tiny painter brush nickname explained
The term pencil originally described a small fine pointed brush for painting. It later extended to describe fine brushes made from camel hair and sable. The word derives from a Latin term meaning little tail.
Kern County Fire Insurance Rates Reduced for West Side
Kern County Fire Chief Harold Bowhay announced the seventh reduction in fire insurance rates since 1931. The Pacific Fire Rating Bureau and Board of Fire Underwriters approved cuts, lowering building costs by at least 40 percent and crops by 33 percent. The move followed efforts by the Board of Supervisors and local fire departments, with new stations and equipment boosting West Side protection. A 20 percent rate drop for West Side dwellings applies to policies written since October 1, 1947.
