Shafter Community Spurs Toys for Tots Cheer this Christmas
In a community wide effort led by the Shafter Chamber and local churches and schools, residents donated toys through collection boxes to support the Toys for Tots drive. Toys were distributed Saturday at Shafter United Methodist Church, aided by Marine Corps Reserve volunteers and local agencies.

UFW Wins Bear Creek Union Election in Kern County
United Farm Workers defeated management on Kimberlina Highway with 648 votes for and 433 against, marking the first major Kern County win for the union in a decade. Bear Creek Production will accept or challenge the result by December 29 as negotiations continue.

Shafter activity center phase one underway for summer completion
Construction on phase one of the Shafter Neighborhood Activity Center is under way with iron structure up and blue exterior skin. Supt. Dan Knapp says the building should be enclosed within a week and phase two will add the second floor with flooring landscaping and patios. The center aims to finish by June for a July 4 celebration and will total over 13,000 square feet hosting a large gym and two community rooms. RLSD will use the facility for PE during school days.

RLSD will adopt PacBell Centrex during Christmas break with a two stage rollout. The district cites cost cuts and time savings from direct school line dialing and voice mail for staff away from offices. New numbers include district office 746-7700 and Lerdo, Primary, Intermediate, and Junior High schools with respective lines.
