Shafter churches announce Christmas programs and music for the season. Assemblies of God and Mexican Baptist schedules include youth pageants, gift exchanges, and special services on Dec 22 24 and 25. Ebenezer Reformed offers German service Dec 17, with multiple Dec 24 25 masses and confessions.
Anita Wardrobe Fund received a $100 donation from El Charaf Shrine club at a Buttonwillow ceremony. Queen Anita, the 1968 Shrine Potato Bowl queen, had surgery for a leg condition from polio and will return for a spring checkup. She will headline at the December 23 Potato Bowl at Bakersfield College Memorial Stadium and ride in the parade. coronation is set for December 20 in Bakersfield with college football players in the All Stars game.
The Richland Board authorized Superintendent David Cooke to gather figures on rehabilitating the unsafe music building and to assemble a master plan. Proposals include a larger building for music and administration, with current admin offices used for intermediate and upper grade offices. The board has $47,000 from an unspecified sale to apply.
Justinian, a captain of the Roman guards stationed for years near Jerusalem, reports rising talk among locals of a predicted king born in Bethlehem. He notes Rome’s prohibition on any rulers outside consul designation and warns of grave consequences if the belief continues.
Charles Zachary 89 of Bakersfield died December 7 in a rest home after an illness of over two years. He was a longtime farmer in Shafter, the local farm later taken over by son Clyde. Services were held at Greenlawn Memorial Park with Rev. Owen Onsum officiating. Surviving: Clyde Zachary, daughter Dorothy Rittenhouse, sister Myrtle Henke, three grandchildren, nine great grandchildren. Pallbearers were grandsons Alvin Everett Tom Phillip Donald and Leroy Ashley. His wife and son Clifford preceded him in death. He was a native of Iowa and had 60 years of self employed farming. Zachary Road near Shafter was named for him.
Jim Watson of Shafter teamed with Oklahoma’s John Miller to finish second in team roping at the National Finals Rodeo in Oklahoma City. California teams dominated the event with Ace Berry of Modesto and Bucky Bradford of Tucson winning, while Berry-Bradford edged Watson-Miller by 25 seconds overall.
Tim Revelle son of Dr and Mrs John H Revelle will furnish a tape recorder for Shafter parents with sons serving in Vietnam. Tim and Richard James of Leslie L Robinson American Legion post 213 sponsor the Christmas Message project. Parents may contact Lee Thomas at the Veterans Memorial Hall before Thursday to send a taped message. tapes take about four days to reach servicemen by air mail.
The Shafter Press will publish on Wednesdays December 27 and January 3 with deadlines moved to Saturdays for news and ads. The staff extends Christmas wishes to readers.
The Shafter Merchants Association offers free rides in Santa's wagon drawn by two Shetland ponies for visiting children this week. Each child gets free candy. Santa will ride the streets daily from noon to 4 p.m.

Shafter’s annual Christmas Basket Drive nears completion after collecting 5 206 pounds of canned goods from Richland students and high school advisory classes. The Key Club led the effort with Bill Hatcher directing the drive and Skip Barwick as president, while local service clubs provided donations and 55 families benefited last year.
John Mathews of the Department of Motor Vehicles in Shafter says a new law requires signatures of parents on all duplicate driver's license applications for minors. He notes signatures already were required on original applications and the rule remains in effect.
Dr. Harold Freedman will MC the annual banquet and installation on Wednesday evening January 24. Wayne Wood becomes president, with Ray Mish as vice president and Roy Kerber as treasurer. New three year board members include Bonner Boel, Roy Kerber, Gary Kruger and Joe Kirk. Special speaker Robert E. Zenk of Bank of America brings farm credit expertise and local civic ties. He lives in Walnut Creek with his wife and son.
