Richland Junior High School recognized seventh and eighth graders with a cookie reception for high STAR test scores in language arts and mathematics. A total of 311 students earned certificates for scoring proficient or advanced, based on May testing. Principal Kathy Mayes praised the students and thanked attending parents for their support.
The Almond Pest Management Alliance received the IPM Innovator Award from the California Department of Pesticide Regulation for 2007 for a Seasonal Guide to Environmentally Responsible Pest Management Practices in Almonds. The project, led by UC IPM and involving multiple industry and university partners, demonstrates reduced risk pest management in California almonds.
Plans for the annual State of the County Event sponsored by the Kern County Board of Trade shift from breakfast to prime time for its LO edition. The 2008 State of the County Dinner is set for Monday January 28 2008 at Bakersfield Holiday Inn Select Hotel with the incoming board chairman as keynote speaker.
Kern County will host the annual State of the County Address in an evening format to better accommodate attendees. Board of Supervisors and local leaders, including Rick Davis, emphasize direct dialogue with the public and reduced travel time for East Kern guests, noting the breakfast version was successful but too disruptive to business schedules.
