Travel safety tips for cold emergencies in vehicles
Advice warns that pace increases frostbite risk while seated and urges arm and leg movement to stay warm. It recommends using a heater for ten minutes per hour, leaving a light on for visibility, cracking a window for air and carbon monoxide safety, keeping the exhaust clear of snow, tying a bright cloth to the antenna to aid rescuers, and raising the hood after the storm to signal need for help. For disaster readiness details, contact a local Red Cross chapter for shelter and the Save a Family program.
