Tragic vehicle train crash near Shafter on December
At about 4 p.m. last Wednesday a 1989 Ford Aerostar van carrying seven walnut workers ran red lights at Poplar and Central Valley Highway and was struck by an Amtrak southbound train traveling about 80 mph. The van, driven by Mario Aguilar 32 of Bakersfield, was hurled into the city limits half a mile ahead. Six passengers named were Jose Munoz 25 Wasco. Benigno Aguilar brother of the driver. Hector Sarabia 36. Juan Jimenez. Jesus Romero 36. Elroy Suarez 41. No train passengers were injured. CHP now leads the investigation.

Memorial dedication honors fallen firefighters in California
More than 1,150 New York firefighters and police officers attended a December 8 2001 memorial dedication in Clovis California funded by Pelco Corporation. Dignitaries from California and officials including Shafter mayor attended as thousands of police and firefighters gathered for the ceremony featuring a large flagpole and bronze plaque.

Shafter Police recovered 402 cases of Coors Light beer valued at $6500 from Economy Food Mart after a Dec 11 search following Union Pacific tips. The Spotlight Theatre at 19th and H streets in Bakersfield, a renovated former office supply store with 99 seats, hosts after school music activities led by locals.
