About 1,000 Smiths Corner residents may gain clean water under a City of Shafter plan funded by a $2 million Rural Economic Community Development Grant. Some residents oppose the new rules for connections and meters while city officials emphasize outside investments and potential future annexation discussions.

Vons Markets announced it will close its Shafter Delano and Arvin stores on February 16 and may sublease to Certified Grocers of Los Angeles. About 134 jobs will be cut, with 60 in Delano.
