A CHP estimate shows 1974 highway deaths through December 7 at 3,680, down from 4,905 in all of 1973. The speed limit, reduced driving, tougher drunk driving enforcement, license suspensions, more freeway miles, and other highway improvements are cited as factors.
Kern High School District Board of Trustees votes to place a revenue limit increase measure on the March 4 ballot to add 283 dollars per student, raising the tax rate by 46 cents to fund educational programs. The measure mirrors the defeated November 5 proposal, with board members stressing the need to protect programs and avoid a district bond.
The week ending Monday saw high temperatures between 39 and 50 while night lows ranged from 35 to 45. The National Weather Service forecast fair weather for Thursday to Saturday with 35 to 50 degree temperatures and early morning fog. Readings are from the USDA Cotton Research Station.
State evaluators visited Richland Primary School to assess the Early Childhood Education Program. After a day of interviews and review, the team rated the Richland ECE program in the superior category with a 7.2 on a 0 to 9 scale, up from 7.6 last year.
The Shafter Press reports Santa Claus will land by helicopter in the Reno's Department Store parking lot at 2 p.m. Saturday. The arrival invites all Shafter area children to greet him and receive treats he plans to bring for the youngsters.
The 28th annual Shafter Buttonwillow Civic Football Awards Banquet honored 160 Shafter High School football players at Veterans Memorial Hall. Awards went to 16 top players across varsity JV and frosh soph, with multiple players receiving dual honors and several named all league, team co captains, or most improved.
Four junior high students in Ray Wiley’s History through Model Building class spoke to the Richland Board of Trustees. Larry Altman presented a King Tiger tank model with its use, while Robert Brown showcased a tactical fighter jet, Juanita Delgado an PT 109 model, and Billy Junior a World War II Scout plane. Assistant Superintendent Al Sandrini described two class stages: model construction and research.
Four new members Carl Moyer Charles Brannen Loyd Link and Marge Siemens were elected to three year terms on the Shafter Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture board. Officers will be elected Thursday and installed at the January 20 banquet which will also award Citizen of the Year and other community recognitions.
Shafter police investigated an extortion attempt involving a large sum of money. An elderly man was contacted by a well dressed man claiming to be a bank representative asking him to withdraw funds for a supposed audit. The suspect fled toward a former police facility. residents warned to call police if approached.
Dr. Richard Garber president of the Richland Board of Trustees says he will not seek another term noting it is best for him and his family. No candidates had filed to run for Garber or Tom Almberg’s expiring terms as of Tuesday morning. Almberg has not stated his intentions. Filing deadline for the March election is Friday January 3.
Primary principal Tom Flanagan and teacher Irene Stockton presented the results of a recent evaluation of the school’s Early Childhood Education program. The report notes how the program stimulates interest in researching and learning. Further details appear in another story on this page.
