Richland School Board B selects scenario B for redistricting Shafter
The Richland School Board voted 3-2 on December 7 to adopt scenario B to redraw Shafter districts. Ayes were Tammy Criswell Deanna Rodriguez Root and Steve Mann. nays were Cain Maldonado and Tony Aguirre. Community speakers questioned timing legality and potential lawsuits, with concerns about minority representation and future actions. The plan must next pass the County Board for effect in November 2012 elections.

Jane Rauthory a senior at Wasco High School won first place in the 30 Assembly District Young Masters Art Competition sponsored by Assemblyman David Valadao. Veterans Christmas Lunch and Holiday Decoration Contest
The Shafter Post of the American Veterans hosts a free Christmas lunch for veterans and families on Friday December 16 from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM at the Veterans Hall. The Shafter Recreation and Park District runs a Christmas Decoration contest with two categories Spirit of Christmas and Most Creative, entry forms available at LAPD or online with a December 16 deadline.

The Shafter Ministerial Association and Shafter Chamber of Commerce hosted a Monday December 5 Christmas celebration. Richland Jr. High Jazz Band and Choir performed alongside Tim and Lindsay Wilkins and baton twirlers. Local groups from Shafter Church of Christ and the Shafter Brass Group entertained. Volunteers and the community provided hot chocolate and coffee while Richland Schools and the Shafter Police Department assisted. The event highlighted city pride and gratitude for contributors.

City offers free brush and limb collection season rules
Beginning December 1 2011 city crews will collect brush and limbs at no cost to residents during December January and February. Piles must be in public streets or alleys with at most ten foot lengths and at least two feet between piles. Stumps wider than one foot or piles blocking traffic or drainage will not be collected. From March through November residents dispose of their own brush at approved locations. The Shafter Wasco Landfill accepts brush at no cost Monday through Saturday 8 00 am to 4 00 pm Sunday 10 00 am to 2 00 pm. Questions call 746-5002.
