Shafter High graduates Jason Ghilarducci and Ryan Kroeker starred for Bakersfield College in the California State Championship of Community, a 31-13 loss to City College of San Francisco. Both earned All Conference honors, with Ghilarducci moving to second on BC’s all time passing list at 3,047 yards.

Energy commission approves two more power plants in county

Pioneer almond grower Ernest Siemens dies in Reedley
Ernest Twest Siemens 83, longtime Shafter almond pioneer and 16 year Kern County School Board member, died December 5 2000 in Reedley. Born October 26 1917 in Aberdeen Saskatchewan he moved to Shafter in 1923. He and his brother Bill built a large almond farming operation, marrying Laura Frantz in 1941. He remained active in farming and church life with the Shafter Mennonite Brethren Church and regional conference leadership. He and his family traveled regularly across the region to visit relatives and friends.
