St Therese Catholic Church announces a Mananitas Mass on December 12 at 5 a.m. The service will be sung by the Mariachi Caballeros and a Spanish Mass follows at noon with the Mariachis. A Mexican dinner is served from 2 to 6 p.m. in the church social hall as the public is invited.
A new local column shares reader tips on home tricks. Tips include a tea spoon of sugar to cure hiccups a flour canister to ripen avocados and placing hose in the freezer to prevent runs.
Airman Wesley D Bald win son of Mr and Mrs Lowell G Baldwin of Bakersfield has graduated at Chanute AFB Illinois from the Air Force jet engine mechanics course. He will serve with a Tactical Air Command unit at Shaw AFB South Carolina. Airman Paul D Baldwin son of the Baldwins has also graduated from Chanute AFB jet engine mechanics and will be assigned to Edwards AFB California. Airman Terry D Wells son of Mr and Mrs John H Wells of Shafter has completed avionics instrument systems specialist training at Chanute AFB and will serve at Nellis AFB Nevada. All graduates receive academic credits through the Community College of the Air Force.
Richland Junior High School's concert chorus under Martha Novak will perform at Pioneer Village in Bakersfield as part of Kern County Museum Alliance's two day Christmas party. Performers include E Clampus Vitas band Merry Aires Noble School Square Dancers EB Concert Band Richland Concert Chorus Lenore Smith Dancers Keynotes Los Estrellitas de San Clemente Dancers Saturday. Sunday features West High Brass Choir Senior Syncopators Music Belles Figuera Dancers Diane Canteras Ballet Girls Triple Trio Boys Chorus Standards School Highland High Dancers Barbershoppers Golden Empire Chorus Bakersfield Singers and audience carols. Free events run noon to 4 pm each day with Santa and refreshments.
More than 3,000 educators and board members will gather December 3 to 5 in San Diego for the CSBA ACSA joint conference with the theme Quest for Excellence. Richland representatives Tom Almberg Phil Zachary David Carthal Dave Anderson Don Neufeld and superintendent Evron Barbe will attend. Notables include California State Superintendent Wilson Riles Arizona Superintendent Carolyn Warner and Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Joan Dempsey.
Maple 4 H Club members visited Shafter 4 H during the November meeting. Reports covered Foods 111 unit fifth year photography and multiple clubs tasks including garage sale posters pricing and Halloween parade. Members participated in games and refreshments were provided by Tommy Ray and Sandra Nickel.
Maple, one of Kern County’s smallest schools, ranks in the top ten percent of the California Assessment Program. Superintendent Gordon Walter credits team effort, teacher dedication, and community stability. Second grade 84 percentile, third grade 90, sixth grade 68. Second graders 84 percent higher than state peers, sixth graders 68 percent higher. third graders the highest among all ages.
