Three Sites Offered By Kern County Group For State College

The Tri-County Site Committee broadens the shortlist to nine sites with three in Northern Kern County and others at Shafter Airport and Famoso Drag Strip. Delano Chamber leaders say the Northern Kern site would serve Kern Kings and Tulare counties and make the college accessible to all three counties. Civic leaders from Kings and Tulare back broader regional access and invite participation to oppose a Kern-only plan.

Benefit Program For Scout Troops In Shafter

A benefit program will be held at the Shafter High School Auditorium on Monday December 20 at 8 p m. The Mennonite Brethren Choir will perform a Christmas music program and tickets sold by Scouts will fund needs of each troop.

Cross Country Team Honored: Lt. Billy Mills Speaker

Former Shafter Man Arrested in Kelly Burglary

Lee Carol Johnson, 32, of Glendale, arrested Friday night at his home on charges of burglarizing the Pat Kelly residence in Shafter on Sunday November 28. Quick license-number and suspect photo led to swift action by Shafter police. Johnson, freed on bond, faces Superior Court in Bakersfield with a date yet to be set. Mrs Kelly praised Police Chief Hanley Witcher and his department for their cooperation in recovering personal keepsakes and family silverware.

District Allotted Large Sum Under Education Act of 1965

Richland School District was allotted 53818.71 from the federal Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 for a program serving students not covered by the act. The plan, separate from the North Shafter Labor Camp study hall, aims to reach about 300 children and must avoid current district activities. The board will review and budget the program at a Friday meeting, after transferring 800 to a travel fund and reporting on Head Start funds and expenditures.

Cold and Foggy Weather at Shafter Cotton Station

Low temperatures persisted in Shafter for a week with readings from 37 to 48 degrees. Overcast skies hid the sun under fog, and the Cotton Station recorded the daily highs and lows as listed.
