Death drives push for rail crossing gates in Bakersfield
State Senator Dean Florez plans Senate Bill 16 to require working crossing arms at all railway crossings after the death of 41 year old Rafael Marin Carrillo at Kratzmeyer Road and Santa Fe Way. The collision with a southbound Amtrak train killed Carrillo, while no one on the train was injured. Florez cites rural safety and proximity to Frontier High School as motive for action and estimates gates would cost about 220000 dollars, with funding from grants and donations aiming for full installation by 2007.
