Local Man's Mother Mary Ann Janes Funeral Held in Pasadena
Mary Ann Janes, 88, California pioneer and mother of E. P. Janes, Shafter high school principal, died Thanksgiving Day. Funeral services were held Sunday at Turner & Stevens Mortuary in East Pasadena with interment in San Gabriel cemetery. She had lived in Pasadena for 12 years, arriving in California in 1884. Her husband, Martin, is mentioned in obituary context.

Maple School to Start New Building Project
Maple school trustees awarded the contract to Elliott & Elliott of Bakersfield for 68 400 dollars after eight bids. The L shaped frame building will have five classrooms offices a wood shop a domestic science room a library and a 400 seat auditorium. The old building will be demolished as sections of the new unit ready for classes. Voters approved a 65 000 bond April 9 with 54 for and 17 against. Principal Jack Singer leads a 175 plus enrollment.

Harvesting Of 1937 Red Emperor Grape Crop Is Finished
The final shipment of Shafter's 1937 Red Emperor grapes left Saturday, totaling 23 carloads for the season. Grapes were packed in fancy logs at Richland Fruit sheds and sent to eastern markets with growers reporting a satisfactory price. Three pickings were completed since November, with remaining vines to be shipped in bulk to wineries. Local vineyards include Emil and Adolf Kirschenmann, F. W. Handel, Otto Thiel, Orvin Mettler, Chris Handel, and Edward Schnaidt.
