Together We Can Shafter Plans Youth and Community Reform
The Together We Can committee in Shafter presented a master plan to address youth, drug, alcohol, and crime issues in the town. The plan spans age groups 0 4 to 5 7 with parenting programs, after school latch key support, school site networks, and community activities to mobilize resources and prevent abuse. Deanna Rodriguez Root and Lawrence Handel stressed community involvement and feasible actions to protect the town from gang influence.

Richland study results to be revealed Monday

The meeting, at 7:30 p.m. in the district music room on Shafter Avenue, follows Superintendent Dr. Dan Knapp's proposal last year aimed at cost cutting. Birth defects not linked to toxins near Buttonwillow study shows
After six months CBDMP led by March of Dimes found two Buttonwillow children’s serious birth defects unlikely caused by environmental toxins. No link to Laidlaw Environmental Services waste site or local pesticides was found. one infant died from anencephaly, another has spina bifida, and a third case was excluded due to early Wasco residence.

Kern County Approves Buttonwillow Racetrack Project
Kern County Supervisors allow CSCC to build a three mile road racing complex on Lerdo Highway near I 5 west of Shafter. Phase I 1.9 mile track costs about 1.2 million, Phase II 1.1 mile road course 550 thousand, Phase III garages and facilities 250 thousand. CSCC plans March 1994 start pending an additional 200 thousand funding.
