Shafter lights up with festive decorations as stores plan 8 pm openings on Thursdays and every evening through December 19. Merchants urge early shopping to dodge last minute rush while a storewide display and individual trees brighten Central Avenue and State Street.
Shafter High School Generals clash with Tehachapi for the valley small schools championship at 2 p.m. Saturday at Mountain View. Tehachapi, undefeated in the Sierra league, and Shafter, undefeated in the Kern Tulare Sierra league, bring strong records as Tony Eli- Mido and Billy Melton lead fast backs in a T formation.
Shafter police reported nine crimes last week. Doyle McCartley, 26, and Billy Bevins, 20, were fined $50 for disturbing the peace, with other arrests including Henry Mitchell, 53, cited for book on sentence, Cecil Shaver, 38, for intoxication, Claxton Green, 29, for disturbing the peace and assault and battery with a 90 day suspended sentence, Elmo Stewart, 29, for reckless driving and disturbing the peace with a 30 day suspended sentence, Rudolf Victor Sanchez, 32, for drunken driving with a two year suspended sentence, David Joe Chapman, 27, and William Jamerson, 50, for default of payment and jail terms. Two fires were reported: a cotton trailer fire near Slater, and a 1940 Chevrolet fire on Santa Fe Way, with losses $250 each and salvages noted.
Sixty persons gathered for a Thanksgiving family reunion and dinner at the Wasco Woman's Club. Attendees included J J Siemens and families, Peters families, Siemens families, and Unruh relatives. The group also held a welcoming shower at the Unruhs' home before dinner. The Unruhs, recently from Lair Saskatchewan, plan to settle in Wasco.
Mrs. P. L. Arnold was the guest of honor at a surprise dessert bridge Monday evening hosted by Mrs. Floyd Cooper at her home 329 East Lerdo. The event celebrated Mrs. Arnold’s birthday.
John Lachenmaier presents two hours of color pictures from a Africa big game hunt at Shafter High School auditorium Monday night at 7 30. Admission funds go to Shafter Boy Scout activities with tickets sold at local drug stores and billiards.
Kern County Farm Bureau launches its 1950 campaign with a kickoff dinner at Elliot Hall in Oildale on December 1. The drive targets 1800 members as Farm Bureau Week runs December 5 with more than 100 boosters in the field and plans across 10 centers to boost membership.
Mr and Mrs Otto Becker Mr and Mrs Ruben Becker and Mrs Bertha Neufeld returned from a ten day trip to Dallas Oregon for the Mennonite Brethren conference. Nineteen delegates from Shafter attended along with about two hundred delegates from fifteen churches from Los Angeles to Washington. Festival services were held November 13 focusing on home and foreign missions. The Dallas church provided meals for four to five hundred attendees. The Becker party toured mills and a spool factory and noted seed potato storage cellars near Tulelake. They spoke with nephews and other relatives in Oakland San Jose and Shafter friends regret Jake Becker's wheelchair condition and Mrs Becker’s fall.
Shafter Chamber of Commerce members urged higher attendance at Friday’s meeting. If turnout remains low, lunch service may be cut and new arrangements tried such as renting space next to the V and W Ice Cream Parlor for lunches. The group also pressed quicker city lighting for Christmas decorations and discussed Oleander plantings on Lerdo Road parkway with highway officials.
Shafter City Clerk F G Shaw announces new traffic speed regulations to go into effect on the Central Valley Highway after signs are placed. A 35 mph zone runs from south of Lerdo Avenue to south of Central Avenue, then 25 mph to south of Poso Avenue, then 35 mph again to 800 feet north of the city limits.
City briefs note that Mr. and Mrs. Fred Delzer and daughter Gloria from Edison join Mr. and Mrs. Ben Kirschenmann of Menno South Dakota and other Kirsch enmann family members for the holiday. Tax official J Perry Brite warns that the first installment of taxes on real and personal property is due December 5 1949 at 5 p.m. with a 6 percent penalty for delinquency. If property was acquired after the first Monday in March 1949, taxpayers should contact township offices for tax information.
Thanksgiving Day visitors at the Clarence Sowedr residence included Mr and Mrs Clarence Cornelison of Hayward Mr and Mrs Eugene Dahenden Mrs H H Neufeld and Mr and Mrs Duward Sowedr of Modesto.
Blueprints show a new twenty thousand dollar wing of the County Building at Shafter. Construction to start within days per F E Grant. The wing will house the justice court constables peace officers connected with the Shafter district with enlarged quarters for the city police and judicial offices including a conference room for Judge Grant.
About three hundred people attended a V F W social at Veterans Memorial Hall featuring Bobby Coles Dixie Land Band. Attendees traveled from Taft Wasco Bakersfield Delano and Oildale to support the benefit to purchase colors for the drum and bugle corps. Refreshments were provided with punch made from ice cream parlor donations. Bill Early announced new recruits for the drum and bugle corps. The next V F W meeting on December 6 will focus on the American Legion Auxiliary.
Fifteen service and church groups form the Shafter Welfare Group and met at Union Congregational Church to elect officers led by Mrs. Jack Battaglia. Rem Bristow was chosen chairman with Mrs. Ned Smith as co chair and Mrs. George Guenther as assistant. The group plans to seek inclusion in the Community Chest Drive. A follow up meeting is scheduled.
In Dallas Oregon attendees included Mr. and Mrs. G Weyand Mr. and Mrs. Dan Loewen Rev. Waldo Wiebe Mr. and Mrs. Franks Russell Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Gaede Mr. and Mrs. Otto Becker Mrs Bertha Becker and Mr. and Mrs. Reuben Becker.
Mr and Mrs H W Pat Kelly and Mr and Mrs Jack Hill attended a Bakersfield tea Sunday afternoon for Dan Reed and his wife celebrating their silver wedding anniversary. About 250 guests joined the afternoon event and 80 dined later that Sunday evening at the Said'e and Sirloin Skyroom.
Mr. Charles Gloeckler came back to his home Monday afternoon following several days at Bakersfield Hospital. He is reported to be improving.
Mr. Edward Neumann and daughter Edna Lois visited Pomona for Thanksgiving and were hosted by the Wm Neumann family. On departure, the Neumanns accompanied the visitors as far as San Rafael Sunday on the return trip.
Dr and Mrs 0 G Ohisson welcomed a group of friends Saturday evening at the Bakersfield Inn prior to the Merrymakers Club dance. Attending were Mr and Mrs Phil Jeffries Mr and Mrs David Mur Mr and Mrs Richard Arnold Mr and Mrs John Jacobses Mr and Mrs Harold Miller and Mr and Mrs Ike Peters.
Santa Barbara holiday guests from the Vignol and Wharton families are noted. Irvin Fike and Roseva Fike visit from Shafter with son Lee for Thanksgiving. Pat Kelly, head of the Central Valley Empire Association, announces approval of a project to study a Tehachapi Toll Tunnel.
PHILL CHANNESON who suffered a heart attack several weeks ago is resting easily and will be home from the hospital this Sunday week.
