National Teacher of the Year encourages Shafter staff to believe reach and risk
Sandra McBrayer, National Teacher of the Year, spoke in the RLSD music room urging belief, reaching for more, and taking risks. She praised teachers while challenging critics of education and stressed addressing homelessness, noting California’s public Homeless Outreach School and San Diego’s 1500 homeless children.

Shafter is among five California cities under 25 000 population shortlisted for two new Enterprise Zones. Gates, longtime SHS teacher and councilman, dies at 89
Robert L. Gates formerly taught history at Shafter High School for 22 years and served on the city council. He died at Visalia Community Hospital at age 89 while living with his daughter in Visalia after a career spanning SHS, Shelton College, and music directing. He was a USC alumnus with an MA in history and previously ran the Marlee Motel in Rio Grande New Jersey. He attended Echo Lake Baptist Church and Evangelical Free Church and was predeceased by his wife Ruth Coulombe Gates.

Ex-wife abducts Sanders' children said to flee to Oregon or Missouri
Richard Sanders told The Shafter Press his ex wife Priscilla took their three children from a babysitter while he worked 7 to 7. He produced custody documents and said police were notified after she was seen with the kids in Buttonwillow. Sanders claims the kids are ages 4 5 and 6. The incident prompted a police response on Los Angeles Street and ongoing investigation.
