Richland SHS and Maple start classes on Monday

Kern County schools open for the new year with RLSD Shafter High School and Maple School welcoming students. An estimated 132 555 K 12 students enroll, up 3.2 percent from last year, while community colleges project 156 455 total with minor declines.

Meeting on track ordinance sparks changes in city rules

Shafter Landfill Hours Shorter for Fall Season

All county landfills and transfer stations will close one hour earlier starting September 1 due to reduced daylight. From September to October facilities operate 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Daily hours vary by site with Buttonwillow and Lost Hills having limited days. November through February hours are 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year, Easter, and the Fourth of July. Pre-registration for Shafter adult classes on Aug 30 and Sept 1. For more info call 746 4961. A food distribution at Shafter Assembly of God Church on Aug 25 from 10 to 11 a.m. Bring proof of income.

Betti, Local Farmer, Eulogized For Lifelong Service

Long time Kern County farmer Louis Michael Betti 74 died August 14 in Wasco Born April 25 1920 in Bakersfield educated locally he served in World War II earning the Bronze Star Oak Leaf Cluster and Purple Heart He built a 60 year farming career in Buttonwillow Lost Hills and western Kern County and helped develop land for Corky Anderson Ken Puryear Farms and C J Richie Farms He led the Italian Association were reserve sheriff’s deputies Lions Club Buttonwillow Chamber of Commerce and remained active after retiring in 1985 with farming alongside his son in law Danny Payne Services were held Friday August 19 at Wasco Memorial Park.

RTC builder offer to settle rejected in state legal tussle

A proposed out of court settlement by Gardemeyer’s attorney Kendel was dismissed as a joke by state officials amid a dispute over cost overruns on RTC facilities in Shafter Taft Delano Coalinga and other cities. Costs cited include Coalinga 10.449 million Delano 10.514 million Shafter 10.620 million with Shafter Taft beds cheaper per design. City officials face scrutiny as depositions and possible suit loom.
