In Shafter California July sparks a town cleanup effort led by city workers, Chamber of Commerce, and citizens. The piece highlights Shafter’s aquatic center recreation program and its prominence in potato and cotton industries, while noting police challenges and a strong volunteer fire department.

The Kern Philharmonic Society and partners launch the 1948 49 Starring Kern County Artists radio auditions in Bakersfield. Applications run September 1 to 25 with top prize a Baldwin Aerosonic Spinet piano and second prize fifty dollars. Eligibility includes Kern County vocalists and solo instrumentalists aged 25 or younger born on or after October 1, 1923.
The Young Women's Mission Society of the First Mennonite Church met at the home of Ruth and Edna Neufeld for a sewing and planning session. They discussed an annual mission sale in the fall, which last year raised about $500 for gospel work. Cake and ice cream were served to members including Leona Heller, Jesse Ziemke, Helen Froese, Donna Goddard, Delores de Mi Lavinia Self, Norma Schmidt, Jean Gorsching, Gloria Janzen, Marilyn Bartel, a Bartel, and the Neu feld sisters.
About fifteen youths attended a church retreat at Lake Sequoia hosted by the First Mennonite Church. Represented were seven California groups with Norma Schmidt Eugene Schmidt Neumann Jean Gorsching and others attending all weekend.
Mr. and Mrs. Chan Crandall will spend two days in Lompoc California at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Lind. They then head to DeLeon Texas to visit Mrs Crandall’s mother Mrs. J. D. Rech.
Young men of Shafter aged 18 to 25 began post war draft registration yesterday. The sign up occurs in the high school gym lobby from 8 to 5 daily Monday through Saturday with a full-time Selective Service representative and local PTA volunteers assisting.
Kern County fair heats up with Taft Delano Wasco and Shafter booth committees racing to create standout displays. Fair manager Lee Clark praises the competition as a builder of community pride and urges exhibitors to file entry forms by September 15.
Fresno State announces two required tests for all entering students during the first week of September. The English entrance test is Tuesday September 7 at 8:30 in the college auditorium with a 55 cent fee. The aptitude and reading test is Friday September 3 at 8:30 with no materials and a 50 cent fee.
Assembly of God youth group held a wiener roast at the arrival home of Rev. and Mrs. Gordon Jaus from vacation. Attending were Mr. and Mrs. Mcdaughter, Rev. and Mrs. Jaus with three children, Mrs. J F Helm with three children and a grandchild, Jack, Ernestine, Dolores Veach, Warnell Nickels, and Cora Mitchell.
Mr and Mrs H W Daniels have returned home after a months vacationing and working in Grover City.
Mr and Mrs Jee ee and Tuesday traveled south toward Burbank on what appears to be a business trip starting Monday.
The 1948 California State Fair opens September 2 and runs 11 days through September 12. Exhibits from 40 of the state’s 58 counties fill the Agriculture Building focusing on agricultural, industrial, and mineral products with elaborate displays. Livestock entries surge in Open and Junior Divisions, including 4-H and Future Farmers of America, while crafts, murals, and dioramas showcase regional artistry.
Veterans in full time training may work part time without losing subsistence. The Veterans Administration sets monthly ceilings under Public Law 512, allowing full subsistence if earnings stay at or below specified limits. Full-time training also permits monthly subsistence of up to 75 dollars with no dependents, 105 with one dependent, or 120 with more than one dependent.
The young people of First Mennonite Church hosted a Friday night farewell for Mr and Mrs Vernon Neufeld as they prepare to move. The couple traveled to Bakersfield for an evening of miniature golfing before their departure.
Kern County launches a program for mentally retarded children this fall in four schools with a $66,900 first year appropriation. State funding may cover up to $75 per pupil annually in future years. Classes begin at Standard in Oildale Vineland near Arvin Indian Wells Valley near Inyokern and Midway in Fellows.
Henry F. Weber a Shafter pioneer died at his home in Shafter at age 80. Born in Germany January 14 1868 he lived in Shafter 30 years and leaves sister Christine M. Weber London England and cousin Leo G. Pauley Bakersfield. Burial will be in Shafter Cemetery. Services date not yet set. Address at death was Rial 109 Shafter.
Carolyn Ann Willingham age two months died Saturday August 28 after seven weeks in Bakersfield hospital. Survived by parents Clifton and wife and brother Jerry Eugene of Shafter. Grandparents Leonard Willingham and David Veach. Funeral Monday at Missionary Baptist Church Wasco. Burial Shafter Cemetery.
Mr and Mrs R W Rodgers returned home with their five married children after two weeks away. They attended school and church while visiting. The trip aimed to aid Mr Rodgers health and he is much improved possibly avoiding surgery.
Wayne C. Hart, 18, of Wasco, enlisted today at the Army and Air Force Recruiting Station in Delano. He will go to Fort Ord for basic training and indoctrination, according to S Sgt Charles Belz. The recruit is a former Wasco High School student.
Enrollment at Kern County Union High School District is expected to rise by 300 to 400 as classes start September 7. Projected October totals include 7943 district wide and 843 at Bakersfield College, with gains at Bakersfield High East Bakersfield Shafter Burroughs McFarland and Kernville high schools. Faculty meetings are planned September 2 with new teachers and district superintendent McCuen addressing staff.

The All-Year Club highlights tourism driven income while the Los Angeles County Fair returns to Pomona September 17 to October 3. Kern County holds its Livestock Show September 28 to October 3 in Bakersfield. Orange crowns Miss Orange September 10 to 11. Huntington Beach hosts the Southern California Twins Convention September 5 to 6 as part of Black Gold Days. Antelope Valley Fair in Lancaster runs September 9 to 12 with vehicle and race events. Cypress observes White Gold Day September 18 focusing on dairy. Torrance’s Factory Fair runs September 15 to 19 showcasing industry and hobbies.
The U S Post Department seeks competitive bids for a new Wasco post office lease after March 4 1949. Bids mailed to Inspector D A Pressly in Los Angeles CA by September 21 are due with a September 22 closing date. bids may be rejected. The new quarters require at least 2350 square feet of work space, replacing the current 10 year location. The post office previously occupied 641 F street Wasco. a federal building for Wasco remains unlikely.
Rev Gordon C Jaus pastor of the Assembly of God Church reports a successful fishing trip with his wife and three children in Mammoth Lakes. They visited Santa Cruz for part of the campaign and saw sacks of Shafter potatoes. A minor car incident occurred when Benney released the brakes causing a minor crash into a tree. the youngest boy Buddy rode on the front fender and was uninjured.
