A Wednesday morning grade crossing crash eight miles north of Bakersfield on highway 99 involved a Santa Fe train striking a westbound truck driven by 30 year old Johnnie Vallion of Sacramento. Vallion escaped injury as his cab was clear, but the trailer was a total loss. the engineer failed to see the track while the fireman did, and the train could not stop.
Dr Willis Doetschman, sole American medical acarologist, spoke at the Shafter Rotary luncheon at Cawelo Motel. Introduced by Dr H Elliot McClure, he noted over 1 500 000 mite species exist and that Kern County wild birds may carry the sleeping sickness virus through mites.
Maple School will open for the 1948-49 term on Tuesday September 7 as announced by principal R E Gribbie. Registration is urged on the first day. First grade eligibility requires five and a half by September 1. Bus routes remain unchanged and cafeteria service resumes under Mrs Lucille Hearon. Extensive summer repairs updated floors walls and the auditorium and overhauled the pumping plant. New year staff include Goldie Weins Marion Wells Verna Spieker Louella Schellenberg Gilbert Adams and Robe rt Given in charge of band orchestra and home economics instruction.
A head on sideswipe occurred at 11 p.m. Wednesday on the Rosedale highway four miles west of Bakersfield injuring Jack 25 and John Law 64 with minor injuries. Law was reported to have been run into by Holder. Saturday 7 10 p.m. Sybil McIntyre 43 of Bakersfield was taken to Taft Community Hospital with minor injuries after a collision on U S Highway 399 six miles east of Taft involving James Dixon 21 of Taft and Jesse McIntyre 45 of Merced. Dixon was cited for hit and run after Dixon pulled out on the highway in front of McIntyre.
The Delano Community Cannery induction course was held at Delano High School to train users for safe efficient canning. Operated by Mrs William Kolb the cannery runs peaches and is open Tuesdays and Thursdays with a per can fee to cover costs.
Kern county seeks title to Minter field land and to clear other claims as a San Francisco meeting brings together six Kern representatives, state finance officials, and War Assets administration leaders. Key attendees include Maurice Boston, Roy Drieggers, Rex Whittemore, Norbert Baumgarten, Cecil Meadows, and Chester James. The OS and housing groups aim to secure title within about 30 days while ensuring ongoing housing projects proceed without interference.
Contractors Pipe line Construction Co installing a 14 inch sewer pipe across Central Avenue near Santa Fe Way to replace the inadequate 8 inch line. A booster pump is added while the old 8 inch line remains in service below Lerdo Road.
Bakersfield notices invite any painter from Shafter to enter canvases in the Kern County Fair. Entry fee is $1.00 per painting with up to two canvases allowed per painter. Works will be displayed for three days. Entries may be left at Howen's residence on Flower Street or at Tracy's Music Store in Bakersfield.

The week yielded two arrests in Shafter both tied to county cases. James McCay of Minter Village faced a disturbance charge and bailed out while Joseph Larkin Harper was arrested on a justice court warrant for battery and given 90 days suspended for two years by Officer Miller of Wasco.
Private Rule L. Smith of Company C 1st Battalion 22d Infantry 4th Division Fort Ord California has completed basic training and is on orders for further duty. He earned marksman with the M1 rifle rating. He enlisted for 3 years at 18. his parents live in Shafter.
The Shafter Public Utility District board boosted water charges for customers outside the district by 33 percent at a regular meeting. The increase aims to offset tax funding disparities since out of district users do not pay district taxes. The board also advanced mosquito control efforts with district engineers and the Kern Mosquito Abatement District. The meeting included requests to the city council to fill cesspools and force hook ups for unconnected properties. A 20 foot easement dedication in the Potter tract was accepted to install a pipeline improving water and sewer service.
A Shafter Merchants Association delegation attended the Monday City Council meeting and left confident the city remains solvent. They discussed avoiding a sales tax increase, noted projected expenses around 84 000 dollars with expected income near 100 000, and considered road resurfacing over full rebuilding to cut costs. The council also tabled a traffic ordinance and outlined street and drainage projects, vehicle purchases, and garbage truck operations.
The Shafter Police Department Civil Service measure was introduced at a Monday City Council meeting. Introduction does not commit action. a two week period follows. The ordinance must be introduced before any adoption or rejection, and if brought to the floor the council must vote to adopt or reject.
Kern Academy opens with September 2 teacher duties and September 6 or 7 student registrations. New staff include J. C. Michalenko from Arpin Wisconsin as Geometry and Physics teacher, Elder A C Harder as Bible and German, L W Roth in English Typing and Home Economics, Norman Nelson in Organ and Piano, Wm Aprile 6 7 and 8th grades, Verena Wikoff grades 3 5, and Pauline Largent grades 1 2. All secondary teachers attend a Pacific Union College convention in Angwin California August 29 to September 1.
Shafter’s bowling emporium opened after a summer closure as fall leagues form. Manager Dave Unruh urges registrations at once. Alleys resurfaced interior modernized score-sights installed. Matinee bowling daily noon to six. prices 30 cents, evenings 35 cents. Located behind Cafe Neuman on Central Avenue.
After a brainstorm with English teacher Mrs. Roth, Kern Academy underwent a thorough cleaning for reopening. Twelve girls contributed to the effort, enjoyed a swim at the Aquatic Center, and hosted a pot luck luncheon amid merriment, calling it a wonderful time.
