The 1957 Kern County Fair debuts with a kickoff circus show featuring clowns acts and acrobats after the opening night parade at 7 p m. in the horse show arena before the grandstand. Ed Clendennen, fair manager, calls it a big free attraction for all attendees.
The Exchange Club will install a dragon shaped climbing device in Shafter’s Manuel Park Tot Lot for children’s enjoyment. J W Ganderson announced Board of Control approval and immediate installation upon arrival.
Richland district officials and teachers convened to plan for September 3 opening. Administrators, principals, and new teachers reviewed schedules, toured Shafter, and prepared classrooms. A Hawaiian Luau hosted by the Richland Teachers Club welcomed new staff and spouses.
Congressman Harlan Hagen announces a $6 115 000 first year appropriation to develop Minter Field as a major radar air defense center under SAGE. The project centers on a massive electronic computer linking radar stations to detect bomber threats and guide interceptions. The Air Force plans rapid expansion and continued funding next year for housing and facilities.
Elmer Unrah announced the appointment of a barbecue ticket committee for the 1957 Richland PTA event. Mrs. John Dalke is committee chair with assistants Mrs. Lewis Woodard and Mrs. Ben Laverty. The barbecue aims to attract over 1000 attendees and is set for October 3.
Mitchell, a Shafter police sergeant with over nine years on the force, fights a suspension over misconduct alleging agitation of dissension. Police Chief Reily cites three officer reports but provides few details and notes a hearing may occur before the personnel review board.
The Richland district releases detailed steps for the first day on Tuesday September 3. Doors open at 8 00 a m for an estimated 1650 students with registrars for each grade level. Kindergarten attendance and lunch/milk ticket info are covered along with home addresses bus arrangements and health records.
The county sealer will test about 2500 cotton weighing scales next week. On September 5 deputies will conduct the annual check in the Shafter area including Saco Gin Cawelo S. A. Camp Gin Shafter C West Gin and other local gins. Growers are asked to leave scales at a gin of their choosing at least one day prior.
Richland school plans bus service changes Tuesday morning. Bus routes remain as last year with adjustments later. William Turpin is missing from bus four while Kenneth Pipkin, director of transportation, assigns Clarence Vickrey Leo Schmidt Clarence Gilbreath Doyal Amos and Franklin on buses 1 3 4 5 and 10 respectively.
The merchants division of the Shafter Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture will meet tonight at 7 o clock at the Burnett Furniture store. Smiley Burnett, division chairman, called the meeting.
The Kern County Union High School and Junior College District board accepted bids from the Borden Co. for milk and by products for Shafter High School cafeteria and from Dicco, Inc. for parking lot paving work. District Engineer Louis Tangen was authorized to file a notice of completion.
The 20-30 Club led by President David Andersen announces a two hour Veterans Memorial Hall variety show on September 12 and 13 featuring music, song, comedy skits and colorful costumes. Shafter residents of all ages can join chorus lines by contacting Anderson at Pioneer 6 2843.
Shafter High School to face new SSL entrants South High Bakersfield and Burroughs while playing nine games total. The slate starts September 20 at home with Fowler Arvin and Lemoore, includes league games against Garces and Corcoran, and ends November 15 hosting Corcoran. Practice begins next week under head coach Dan Bledsoe.
