Weekend Heat Wave Hits Shafter With 102 Degree Readings
Two days of 102 degree heat marked the weekend in Shafter. Nights cooled to 54 to 66 degrees as readings from the USDA Cotton Research Lab noted high temperatures of 102 on August 24 and 25, with 96 on August 22 and 23 and 98 on August 23.

Shafter Council lowers tax rate and eyes new water well
The Shafter City Council reduced the current fiscal year tax rate by a cent and a half after learning the city assessment rose by 565 000 dollars. A new water well near the Murphy Products plant was proposed with a gas engine option, with costs estimated between 64 000 and 71 000 dollars.

The paper corrects last week’s item stating six men pleaded guilty to alcohol and marijuana charges. Six pled guilty only to alcohol, paying $35 fines each. No pleas were entered on marijuana charges and those involved are apologized to for the error.

Thirty teachers from Richland and Lerdo schools attended a two day pre service workshop in the Richland band room led by Dr. Robert Daw from the Human Development Institute and Bay Area specialists. The training focused on scheduling record keeping and creating individualized instruction plans for students.
