Judge Rejects Guilty Plea in Burglary Case

Richard Dean Nixon faced a rejected guilty plea to burglary as Judge John M. Nairn declined the agreement for a county jail term not exceeding one year. The case was sent from Bakersfield Municipal Court on August 15 for probation referral and potential rehabilitation. Nixon had admitted to the July 17 preliminary hearing and July 7 arrest for the April 9 burglary of Roy Bellows at 483 West Marengo. The console television was recovered in Wasco and returned to Bellows.

Wasco Keeps Cable Rate Hike After Last-Minute Council Action

Shafter approved a 48 percent Warner Cable rate increase after a council meeting and further talks led to Wasco remaining as the last holdout. Wasco scheduled a public hearing for September 9 with rates set to take effect October 1, including a $14.95 installation charge with a 60 day moratorium. The plan raises the monthly fee from $4.75 to $7 while excluding a $1.50 FM radio outlet charge.

City Council Rejects Damages Claim Against Shafter

The City of Shafter rejected a $300000 damage claim filed by Gary L Jones alleging police conspiracy to civil rights violations false arrest and perjury. Attorney Neil Roberts represented Jones who was arrested February 19 for DUI resisting arrest and destruction of a place of confinement. Jones says he lost his license and job after a breath test notification was not given and perjury claims arose in a DMV hearing. Chief Bob Nixon declined further comment beyond noting Jones refused testing after being advised to take one.

Tennis courts exempt from EIR requirements

The Shafter Planning Commission found a proposal to build two lighted tennis courts on Richland School District property categorically exempt from environmental review. Funding would come from the 1974 State Park Bond Act, with grants to the city and the school district to be combined. The commission also adopted new elements for the General Plan including noise safety and scenic highways.

Brothers sought for burglary and assault on officers

Shafter police seek Sylvis Riddle 21 and his 17 year old brother on burglary disorderly conduct and battery on officers charges. Warrants worth 5000 dollars issued by Bakersfield Municipal Court and Shafter Justice Court after a August incident and a later fight at the police administration building. Officers used mace. the younger brother was handcuffed.
