Red Bird of Paradise bush brightens Bakersfield yard
A Bakersfield reader recalls spotting a tall red and gold bird of paradise plant along New Stine Road near Sagepoint, mistaking it for a torch lily. The dwarf poinciana reaches five to six feet, with red cup shaped bracts and long red stamens, and is not related to Strelitzia reginae. The writer learns a neighbor in Maple School area has a similar plant from Arizona and hopes for blooms next summer.
