Two Injured In Highway Collision
A two car crash on the Beech Avenue intersection with Central Valley Highway left two people injured and two vehicles heavily damaged. Eddie Franklin Delisle, 58, Bakersfield, allegedly ran the stop sign. Edward Wayne Wheeler, 41, Riverdale, was cited. Continued on page 6.

Most Kern Schools Set Sept Tenth Open Date
County Superintendent Harry E. Blair announced that most Kern districts plan a September 10 opening for the 1969-70 school year with September 2 as the second choice. Elementary districts listed for Sept 10 include Arvin Bakersfield Beardsley Buena Vista Buttonwillow DiGiorgio Edison Fairfax and others. Taft Wasco and Unified districts like Maricopa Mojave Muroc and Southern Kern also start then. Several schools begin Sept 8 or Sept 9 with campuses at Tehachapi Kern Joint Junior College and West Kern Junior College starting Sept 9. Shafter High School reconstruction proceeds under the Field Act with extensive renovations and a replaced roof.

State Funds Approved Richland School District Apportionment Uncertain
Richland School District may receive about $18 per unit of ADA under the 1969-70 apportionment though final figures lag. The district also will get funds for special education needs and there will be likely no tax rate change. Board noted Civil Defense plan updates and adjusted meeting date due to Labor Day.

Kern Drug Abuse Council To Incorporate Thursday
The Drug Abuse Council of North Kern will formally incorporate at a Thursday night meeting called by president Phil Zachary. The Richland School library hosts an 8 p.m. session resuming operations after a summer recess, with a film on marijuana and introduction of incorporation papers by Shafter city attorney Al Mortimore who donated his services. A nominating committee will be appointed and officers and a board of directors set at the Monday business meeting. The current board includes Zachary Newman Gates Stepp Ohlsson Ohanneson McKinley. Gates will be replaced by a new principal at McFarland High. Zachary urges all members and nonmembers to attend as about 50 signed up in April.
